TWO CREW MEMBERS INJURED AFTER A MAERSK CONTAINER VESSEL HITS STS LEEUWIN II IN AUSTRALIA’S FREMANTLE PORT
A docked, sail-powered, 1986-built training ship, STS Leeuwin II was hit by an AP Moller-Maersk container ship at Australia’s Fremantle Port on Friday, the 30th Aug, 2024.

According to the Maritime & Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the Singapore-flagged 8,814-teu Maersk Shekou (build-2010) collided with 236-gt Leeuwin II, the docked training ship. The bow of the 332-metre Shekou struck the Leeuwin, with the stern of the vessel then hitting A Berth and the roof of the Maritime Museum. The impact damaged the hull of the Maersk Shekou, which was being accompanied into the port by four tug boats. The port’s famous maritime museum is also reported to have suffered damage during this incident. Two night-watch crew members, present on-board the docked training ship escaped with injuries, after the two vessels collided.
The 55-metre long, three-masted 1850s-style STS Leeuwin II Ship is owned and operated by youth development charity Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation. It is used in sailing training of youth across Western Australia.
