Athens based shipping company, Arcadia Shipmanagement Co. Ltd. has joined forced with IFAW, Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute, OceanCare, and WWF Greece, to work towards conservation of endangered whale specie, Sperm Whale by agreeing to change its route in the eastern region of the Mediterranean Sea.

Their preference of ice-free waters between 3000 to 3500 feet in the Mediterranean region, puts them on a direct collusion path with the ships. Although, after the ban on their hunting, the Sperm Whales numbers have increased but they are still considered as an endangered specie.

It is expected that other shipping companies, operating in this region, which are also committed towards sustainable and responsible shipping practices, would follow the course taken by Arcadia Shipmanagement. Such steps would go a long way in saving the habitat of Sperm Whales and further boost up their numbers.
