INDONESIA’S PERTAMINA TO DOUBLE ITS FLEET CAPACITY TO MORE THAN 600 VESSELS
The shipping arm of the company aims to take its current fleet size of 320 tankers fleet size to double the numbers in the next 10 years.
Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), the shipping unit of Indonesia's national energy company Pertamina plans to double its fleet of 320 tankers in the next 10 years, announced the unit’s s CEO Yoki Firnandi in Houston on Thursday. The expansion is aimed at reducing the average age of the company's fleet. Alongside this aim, an investment into vessels to transport Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is also being pursued by the company.
Indonesia falls in the top 10 LNG producing nations of the world. IN 2023, it exported 16 million metric tons of LNG, which is 5% of the global LNG production. Therefore, gravitating towards cleaner fuel for its maritime industry is the natural course for Indonesia. Firnandi shared that as a part of its global commitment towards reducing carbon footprints of Indonesia’s maritime industry, the nation is trying to switch to cleaner alternate fuels for its tankers. “There will be a lot of homework to do”, he added referring to the IMO 2020 regulations that transformed the global maritime fuel standards. In 2021 the company entered into strategic agreement with Japan’s Shipping Company Nippon Yusen Kaisha with potential collaboration for LNG logistics business. PIS secured a $185 million syndicated loan for the purpose of funding its infrastructure projects and upgrading its fleet.

The impressive yacht was originally launched in 1972, commissioned by its first owner John von Neumann. According to Robb Report, Von Neumann hired Italian shipyard Baglietto to build him a boat that was “faster than any other motoryacht on the water.” During its maiden voyage, Cujo had largely achieved this goal thanks to its twin 54-liter V-18 turbo diesel engines, which provided 2,700 horsepower and allowed it to easily hit 46 miles per hour. Von Neumann eventually sold the boat to arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, who later passed the boat to Dodi Fayed, his nephew.
Though Princess Diana was among the most notable guests onboard, other high-profile passengers hosted by Fayed included Clint Eastwood, Tony Curtis, Bruce Willis, and Brooke Shields.

However, the boat’s story came to a dramatic end last summer, when it sunk off the coast of France, as reported by The Independent. According to a Facebook post from the Gendarmerie des Alpes-Maritimes, a division of the French military, passengers issued a distress call at around 12:30 local time on July 29, 2023. A little under an hour later, a rescue boat arrived, finding the vessel’s bow already partially submerged. “The cabins of the yacht were already flooded, and only a few suitcases located in the kitchen and on the deck could be retrieved by the gendarmes,” reads the statement. The seven passengers who were on board had already evacuated and were safely on a nearby lifeboat. Rescuers and passengers then quickly left the area, as the boat sank 2,500 feet to the ocean’s floor. The cause of the accident was not shared; however, according to Boat International, sources claimed that the ship hit an unknown object floating near the center of the hull.
Those who watch The Crown will be unsurprised to learn that the interiors of Jonikal, which has since been renamed Isabell Princess Of The Sea by a new owner, are just as lavish as those depicted in the look-alike on the show. Inside, the ship boasts nine staterooms, a formal dining room, bar, office space, swim platform, sun deck, and Jacuzzi. Designed by navel architect Vincenzo Ruggiero in the 1980s, coffered ceilings and dark wood paneling draw inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 1900s.
In his memoir, Prince Harry remembers his experience on the yacht as idyllic. “There was much laughter, horseplay, the norm whenever Mummy and Willy and I were together, though even more so on that holiday,” he writes. “Everything about that trip to St. Tropez was heaven. The weather was sublime, the food was tasty, Mummy was smiling.”

THE TRAGIC SINKING OF “KURSK” RUSSIAN NUCLEAR SUBMARINE IN AUG 2000
The Kursk Nuclear Submarine disaster is counted amongst one of the most tragic naval disasters in the history of mankind, killing all the 118 Russian personnel on-board.
On the morning of 12th August, 2000 the Russian nuclear-powered Project 949A Antey (Oscar II Class) submarine named Kursk was taking part in a major naval exercise in Summer-X, held in Russia in over a decade of the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
It took more than 16 hours to locate the submarine, which/h rested on the ocean floor at a depth of 108 metres (354 ft).
Multiple security lapses and violation of safety protocols, took place on every front resulting in the absolute failure of the Checks-&-Balances systems put in place to prevent any disaster.
An official investigation concluded that the reasons behind the accident. It detailed the possible reasons as follows:
· Explosion in the inner and outer tube doors: When the crew loaded a dummy 65-76 "Kit" torpedo, a faulty weld in its casing leaked High-Test Peroxide (HTP) inside the torpedo tube, initiating a catalytic explosion. The hypothesis was challenged by the torpedo manufacturer, insisting that its design would prevent the kind of event described. The explosion blew off both the inner and outer tube doors, igniting a fire, destroying the bulkhead between the first and second compartments, damaging the control room in the second compartment, and incapacitating or killing the crew present in the torpedo room and control-room.
· More Explosions follow: Two minutes and fifteen seconds after the first explosion, another five to seven torpedo warheads exploded, which tore a large hole in the hull of the submarine. The bulkheads collapsed between the first three compartments and all the decks, it destroyed the fourth compartment and killed everyone still alive, forward of the sixth compartment.
· A freak accident killed the remaining crew members after six hours of the initial explosion: Analysts concluded that 23 sailors took refuge in the small ninth compartment and survived for more than six hours. When the oxygen began to run low, they attempted to replace a potassium superoxide chemical oxygen cartridge in a last ditch effort to survive, but it fell into the oily seawater and exploded on contact. The resulting fire killed several crew members and triggered a flash fire that used-up the remaining oxygen, leading to the suffocation of the remaining survivors in the submarine.
· A nuclear disaster was averted: Despite multiple explosions in the submarine, the nuclear reactors shut down safely, averting another major nuclear disaster after Chernobyl.
Mamoet, a Dutch company was awarded a salvage contract in May 2001. Within a three-month period, this company and its subcontractors designed, fabricated, installed, and commissioned over 3,000 t (3,000 long tons; 3,300 short tons) of custom-made equipment. A barge was modified and loaded with the equipment, which arrived in the Barents Sea in August. After October 3, 2001, some 14 months after the accident, the hull was raised from the seabed floor and hauled to a dry dock. The salvage team recovered all but the bow of the submarine, including the remains of 115 sailors, who were later buried in Russia.
The Russian Government and the Russian Navy were intensely criticised over the incident and their responses. A four-page summary of a 133-volume, top-secret investigation revealed "stunning breaches of discipline, shoddy, obsolete and poorly maintained equipment", and "negligence, incompetence, and mismanagement". It concluded that the rescue operation was unjustifiably delayed, further adding that the Russian Navy was completely unprepared to respond to the disaster.
